Hybridbigor -- interdisciplinary melting pot

hybridvigor.net

Came across this in other online discussions. Haven't read too deeply yet, but interesting at the start. Hybridvigor.org gives some of the organizational background and people who are involved.

Hybridvigor.net is a work in progress that's designed to be a resource center and "tool shop" for interdisciplinary problem solving. It has two functions: (1) to expose researchers to new people, ideas and relevant knowledge outside their disciplinary boundaries; and (2) to provide them with the tools — and, as our work develops over time, access to the metrics and methods — by which to conduct their own boundary-crossing explorations and collaborations

"IT Doesn't Matter" followup

Nicholas G Carr: IT Doesn't Matter

Here's Nicholas' web site with many responses to his article "IT Doesn't Matter" published last May in the Harvard Business Review. Clearly this is a continuing debate with the Tech folks working hard to defend their positions. Carr will be releasing a book of the same name early next year.

Respect the Taste Buds

Slow Food USA

My friends Joe and Terry told me about this a while ago. Interesting thing is that the Slow Food movement is one of the projects mentioned in the Doors of Perception East event listed below.

Recognizing that the enjoyment of wholesome food is essential to the pursuit of happiness, Slow Food U.S.A. is an educational organization dedicated to stewardship of the land and ecologically sound food production; to the revival of the kitchen and the table as centers of pleasure, culture, and community; to the invigoration and proliferation of regional, seasonal culinary traditions; and to living a slower and more harmonious rhythm of life.

Doors of Perception

Doors of Perception East
DoorsEast is a design and innovation network linking South Asia and Europe. Its aims are to learn how to design services, enabled by ICT, that meet basic needs in new ways – and to share this knowledge with citizens, education, industry, and professionals. This website describes the event which takes place in Bangalore in December 2003.
...
If tech-push is indeed over as a driver of innovation, as we believe, a new model of innovation is needed if we are to exploit the broadband communications, smart materials, wearable computing, pervasive computing, and connected appliances, that we’re unleashing upon the world.
.....
Experiences doing projects in real places with real people will be compared. There will be discussion of new principles for the design of network-based services in new contexts. Tools and methodologies for mapping local knowledge will be presented and compared. Speakers will share lessons learned about service designs and new business models.

The Internet Storm Center gathers more than 3,000,000 intrusion detection log entries every day. It is rapidly expanding in a quest to do a better job of finding new storms faster, isolating the sites that are used for attacks, and providing authoritative data on the types of attacks that are being mounted against computers in various industries and regions around the globe. Internet Storm Center   is a free service to the Internet community. The work is supported by the SANS Institute from tuition paid by students attending SANS security education programs.
