Mail Art Lives!!

An online friend just told me about three projects involving sending physical objects around to other folks -- via post or carrier. They sound like fun.

1. 1000journals

The1000journalproject is an independent, privately funded social experiment. It is an attempt to follow 1000 journals throughout their travels, to see where they go, and what people do with them.

2. Nervous Industries

Nervousness.org is our online presence, where we try experiments in Land Mail (also known as Snail Mail), to see if we can find new ways for people to interact and communicate. We encourage your participation!

As of this minute there are 7981 Nervous People, 6893 Objects (LMAOs), and 34351 exchanges.

and 3. 20 Things Project

The 20 Things project is an online gallery showcasing the work of artists who create limited edition multiples.

The only way to acquire this work is to make work of your own to trade.

Art swaps are organized at irregular intervals, in groups of 20, at the whim of the site organizer.

Wave3 Software offers Session which is a collaboration tool for both Windows and Mac OS X platforms. They offer a 30 trial version and the full blown sells for $199. Might be worth looking at.

New Book

Grid Computing Book Resource Page This is a reference page for a new bokk, Grid Computing: Making the Global Infrastructure a Reality for Concurrency and Computation:Practice and Experience, edited by Fran Berman, Geoffrey Fox, and Tony Hey.

I've been working with Tony the past day or two and he's shared a copy of this volume with us. Looks good, but needs a 2nd edition with end-to-end QoS

a reminder....

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The oldest voice in the U.S. Congress rose on Wednesday to offer a final pre-war warning that President Bush's march to battle is dangerously misguided.

"Today I weep for my country," said West Virginia Democratic Sen. Robert Byrd. "No more is the image of America one of strong, yet benevolent peacekeeper. ... Around the globe, our friends mistrust us, our word is disputed, our intentions are questioned.

"We flaunt our superpower status with arrogance," Byrd said, adding: "After war has ended the United States will have to rebuild much more than the country of . We will have to rebuild America's image around the globe."

Item 5 is worth thinking about:
5. Of the 535 members of Congress, only ONE (Sen. Johnson of South Dakota) has an enlisted son or daughter in the armed forces! If you really want to stand up for America, please send your twin daughters over to Kuwait right now and let them don their chemical warfare suits. And let's see every member of Congress with a child of military age also sacrifice their kids for this war effort. What's that you say? You don't THINK so? Well, hey, guess what -- we don't think so either!

Topicmaps.Org is an independent consortium of parties interested in developing the applicability of the Topic Maps Paradigm[1] to the World Wide Web, by leveraging the XML family of specifications as required.

This work includes the development of version 1.0 of an XML grammar for interchanging Web-based Topic Maps, called XML Topic Maps (XTM) Version 1.0, written by the Topicmaps.Org Authoring Group. All versions of the XTM Specification will be permanently licensed to the public.
