The Case Against the War

The Case Against the War
by Jonathan Schell

"All of us have heard this term 'preventive war' since the earliest days of Hitler. I recall that is about the first time I heard it. In this day and time...I don't believe there is such a thing; and, frankly, I wouldn't even listen to anyone seriously that came in and talked about such a thing."
--President Dwight Eisenhower, 1953,
upon being presented with plans to wage
preventive war to disarm Stalin's Soviet Union

"Our position is that whatever grievances a nation may have, however objectionable it finds the status quo, aggressive warfare is an illegal means for settling those grievances or for altering those conditions."
--Supreme Court Justice Robert Jackson,
the American prosecutor at the Nuremberg trials,
in his opening statement to the tribunal

D.J. Watts -- connections

The Chronicle: 2/14/2003: Unraveling the Mysteries of the Connected Age

...by helping us to understand better the relationship between cause and effect that pertains to complex, connected systems, the science of networks teaches us a third lesson: that such systems, from power grids to businesses, and even entire economies, are both more vulnerable and more robust than populations of isolated entities. Networks share resources and distribute loads, but they also spread disease and transmit failure -- they are both good and bad. But unless we can understand exactly how connected systems are connected, we cannot predict how they will behave. And unless we know what kind of behavior we are trying to understand, we don't even know what it is about the network that is supposed to matter. In this manner, the science of networks may not only provide deep theoretical insight, but also yield practical solutions to currently intractable problems.

Duncan J. Watts is an assistant professor of sociology at Columbia University and an external faculty member of the Santa Fe Institute. This essay is adapted from Six Degrees: The Science of a Connected Age, to be published this month by W.W. Norton & Co.

something completely different

Line with two syllables as in Lie On

This is about a cat of a lady from Oklahoma and has a slight accent. She has cats and when she lived in the south she would take them to the groomers and have what is called a Line Cut. To her a line cut is when all of the fur hanging down below the cat's tummy is taken off (because it gets matted or snarled).

Free World Dialup (sip)

Free World Dialup - by pulver.com

Free World Dialup (FWD) "works" by connecting FWD members who both have Broadband internet access with each other. When you register for FWD, you are assigned a FWD number. Once you register your FWD phone with the FWD Network, you are able to contact all of the other registered FWD members if they are on-line when you are.

FWD is a community network of worldwide broadband consumers who call each other using SIP phones. SIP phones come in many shapes and sizes. Some SIP phones are hardware based and others are software based, "Softphones" which run on your PC. One supported hardware device, the Cisco ATA-186 connects to both your broadband internet access and either a regular telephone or a cordless telephone. Another supported hardware phone which has recently become a very popular prop in Hollywood movies and TV shows is the Cisco 7960. With FWD, you get a chance to put the Cisco 7960 to work!

UNIFON alfubet

UNIFON ALFUBET

Unifon means "one sound" and implies one sound per symbol. To achieve this with English the traditional alphabet can be augmented. Unifon adds 17 new letters to create an alphabet with 40 characters. Five of the new letters are for the long vowels. The sounds that correspond to AEIOU are assigned to the capital letters on the keyboard. Variants of K, N, S, Z, T, and D are also assigned to capital letters. Six letter-sound pairs must be learned. cC qQ xY
