Fluxus Event

This is c/o an olde mail art friend, Ken Friedman. The event process began back in 1975. It is fairly simple -- and now is being done with telefacsimile [fax] and email. Hmmm, mebbe we should add live chat, IRC, or quick blogging?

"...
In One Year and Out the Other

On New Year's Eve, make a telephone call from one time zone to another so that you are conducting a conversation between people located in two years.

by the way you can read more about Ken and some of my other cORrespondants at The Fluxux Home Page.

As a friend suggested, when trying to sort out what is happening it is often best to find a news source as close geographically to the event. This site appears to be a good resource to begin that kind of digging.

Working with MS Word

Understanding Styles in Microsoft Word - A Tutorial in the Intermediate Users Guide to Microsoft Word

"... Styles are arguably the most important feature in Microsoft Word. Why? Because everything that you do in Word has a style attached. The definition of a style is two-fold. First, you can think of a style as a set of pre-defined formatting instructions that you can use repeatedly throughout the document. Let's say each heading in a document must be centered, uppercase, bold, and a slightly larger font size. Each time you need to apply formatting to the heading, you have to go through the entire process to get the text the way you want it. If you store the formatting commands in a style, you can apply that style any time you need it without having to do all of the reformatting.

Possibly more important however is that styles are used to "tag" or identify parts of a document. An example of this is whether text is part of a heading, a footnote, a hyperlink, or body text. These are all examples of styles in Word. ..."

"... To make computer technology available to a wider audience than has been possible by radically and rationally improving its usability. ..."

"... The primary method of the Humane Environment project is to design software systems, starting from an understanding of human cognition and the needs of the user rather than from a software, hardware, or marketing viewpoint. We design our environment to work with presently affordable and available hardware and with realistic limits on the amount of software development that can be achieved in a reasonable amount of time. ..."

WMR968 Home Weather Station

The Oregon Scientific Store -- Cable Free Complete Home Weather Station

"... Exciting, innovative wireless outdoor sensors operate on solar power for simple installation and sophisticated use. Every sensor necessary for total weather monitoring is included -- temperature, humidity, barometric pressure, wind speed and direction, and rainfall. The indoor touchscreen control sensor with bright blue HiGlo(tm) backlighting is only about 7" wide -- perfect for desktop or wall-mount use anywhere.

The unit displays and records over 20 separate weather conditions, selected by a press of the touch-sensitive, jumbo LCD display screen:
>> Barometric pressure and trend (accurate up to 13,000 feet)
>> Weather forecast
>> Indoor/outdoor temperatures
>> Wind speed/direction as well as wind chill
>> Indoor/outdoor dew points
>> Rainfall rate and daily/accumulated amounts
>> Hygrometer with indoor/outdoor relative humidity readings ..."

What a way to figure out just how fast these wind gusts here at Buccleuch are really ripping by! Hmm, and then hook it up to send out hourly reports to the net so we can know the real weather from DeeCee instead of guessing from other stations 25 - 40 miles away. heh

Wireless Thing One & Thing Two

Thing One: Bell Canada launches public wireless Internet hotspot pilot

"... Bell Canada today announced Bell AccessZone®, a Wi-Fi hotspot pilot that will provide Canadians with wireless high-speed access to the Internet (Wi-Fi is short for Wireless Fidelity and is the most popular worldwide term for high-speed wireless local area networks in offices, homes and public spaces). During the three month pilot, Bell will convert a number of high traffic payphones and other locations in Toronto and Montreal into wireless Internet access points. This gives mobile professionals, business travelers and consumers with 802.11b enabled laptops or wireless handheld devices another convenient option to wirelessly access the Internet, e-mail and corporate networks in public locations. ..."

nifty eh what?

Thing Two: SSB told me stORy this mORning about how she used wireless to get a friend to answer her doOR. Seems, she was visiting friend who did not answer the doOR bell. So, intrepid daughter goes to car and returns with iBook. Connects via friend's access point. Fires up instant messaging and asks friend to open the front doOR. She did. Strange but true!

don't miss it til it's gone

Funny how I've been ranting and capturing links to information about the current regime's activities to reduce our personal rights and liberties. The political sort of thing. Well, this weekend I ran into a technological version.... the control key (CTRL) went out on my laptop.

Little did I realize how often I type CTRL-C then CTRL-V to copy and paste URL's and other info from one window to the next. Nor did I realize that many of my apps using pop up windows don't have explicit access to drop down menus -- only keyboard controls. This means that I can't copy-paste into these little windows.

Fortunately IBM repairs is sending me a replacement keyboard up here in the Blue Ridge mountains. Unfortunately I am not sure how to replace the current regime as easily!!

On that note --- Happy Holidays & Best Wishes for a Safe and Beneficient New Year (GregORian Calender wise)

ON/OFF an anthropological view of technology

ON/OFF

"... ON/OFF was a one-year project with a mission to explore and document social aspects of the use of communication technologies in a variety of cultural settings, with a special focus on the impact that widespread adoption of mobile communication technologies (and the resulting phenomenon of perpetual accessibility) has had on people's sense of place, their sense of self, their relationships to one another, and their ability to manage the various roles they are required to fulfill in daily life.

Our research team produced a short, ethnographic film about the ways that mobile and ubiquitous communication technologies (primarily cellphones, laptops, and pagers, but also desktop email and instant messaging) are affecting people's lives -- affecting how we communicate with family members and colleagues throughout the day, and changing how we expect other people to behave in public and in private places. ..."
