The every day usage of the SURFnet network is shifting towards advanced broadband applications. Many of these applications are more and more used extensively by end users. For example think about video-assets integrated in electronic learning environments. The amount of different configurations of computers from students, researcher and professors combined with a multitude of configurations for local networks at institutes, gives a huge potential for problems with network access and services. The SURFnet Detective has been developed to detect a number of aspects that may cause the problems. This way the SURFnet Detective can be used in order to support end users directly or give the helpdesk extra information of an end user's configuration.
